Vote Count Continues In Key States As President Trump Receives Pushback Against False Election Claims

While a winner has not been declared in the presidential race, President Donald Trump is reiterating unfounded claims that Democrats are trying to “steal” the election from him. He did not back up his claim with any details or evidence, and state and federal officials have not reported any instances of widespread voter fraud.

Trump spoke from the White House briefing room on Thursday, and had harsh criticism of pre-election polling that showed him trailing Democrat Joe Biden and claiming without evidence that the ballot-counting process is unfair and corrupt. He also renewed his criticism of widespread use of mail-in balloting in the pandemic.

The ballot-counting is ongoing in several battleground states. With 71 electoral votes in the balance. the biggest prize — Pennsylvania’s 20 electoral votes — could be awarded soon when election officials predicted most of the 250,666 outstanding ballots would be tabulated. Besides Pennsylvania, the race remained too close to call in Arizona with 11 electoral votes, Nevada with six, Georgia with 16, North Carolina with 15 and Alaska with three.

Biden’s electoral count stands at 253 to Trump’s 213; it takes 270 to win.

Protests In NYC, Portland Lead To Arrests As U.S. Awaits Results Of Presidential Election

At least 30 people were arrested overnight in Portland, Ore., and New York City amid protests that erupted in response to the U.S. presidential election.

Approximately 10 people were arrested Wednesday evening in downtown Portland where a demonstration was declared a riot as storefronts were smashed and ATMs damaged. Oregon Gov. Kate Brown activated the National Guard to assist local law enforcement with combating the widespread violence. The demonstration of some 350 people formed in the North Park Blocks of Portland before marching downtown and was declared a riot after the violence erupted, police said.

In New York City, police said more than 20 people were arrested, accusing them of attempting to “hijack a peaceful protest by lighting fires, throwing garbage and eggs in Manhattan.” The New York Police Department said on Twitter that officers had confiscated weapons such as knives and M80 fireworks while attempting to disperse a demonstration.

Kansas Hospitals Stressed as Coronavirus Cases In The State Continue To Rise

Several dozen hospitals in Kansas reported on Wednesday that they expect to deal with staffing shortages over the next week as the state continues to report an average of well over 1,000 new coronavirus cases a day. The Wichita area’s two major health systems said Wednesday that almost 150 coronavirus patients were hospitalized, their highest numbers since the pandemic began. Additionally, they are trying to bring about 60 nurses from outside Kansas into the state to help with staffing, and it has converted space into two new units for COVID-19 patients.

A surge in cases has also prompted public health officials and the local Chamber of Commerce in south-central Kansas to advise residents to be more diligent in following the mask mandate and following other public health recommendations, such as observing social distancing and avoiding gatherings. Public health officials say Kansas is seeing such large numbers of new cases because too many people aren’t wearing masks in public, aren’t social distancing and aren’t avoiding gatherings. They contend that people are letting their guard down at family events such as parties, weddings and baby showers.

The state averaged 33 new hospitalizations a day for the seven days ending Wednesday. The state health department reported 91 new hospitalizations since Monday, bringing the total to 3,984 since the pandemic reached Kansas in early March. The state also reported an additional 41 deaths since Monday, to bring the pandemic total to 1,087. Kansas averaged 11 additional deaths a day for the seven days ending Wednesday.

Taylor Swift Free to Re-Record Her First Five Albums After Battle With Former Label

Taylor Swift is officially free to re-record her old music. Swift can now legally re-record new versions of her first five albums, which Scooter Braun gained ownership of last year following his $300 million deal with Big Machine Label Group.  Swift said last year that her contract allowed her to re-record her music in November 2020 — and her fans got #TaylorIsFree trending on Twitter.

Swift confirmed in August 2019 that she planned on re-recording her first five albums — Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, and 1989 — once legally allowed to do so. “It’s something that I’m very excited about doing, because my contract says that starting November 2020, I can record albums one through five all over again. I’m very excited about it. I think that artists deserve to own their work,” she added. “I just feel very passionately about that.”

Results In Many States Too Close To Call As Vote Count Continues In Presidential Election

Due to a huge increase in mail-in voting, the face-off between President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden did not follow a traditional election night timeline, and it is possible that a projected winner may not be known for days. With many states too close to call, and particular key battleground states still counting ballots into Wednesday morning, a winner is yet to be declared in this year’s Presidential Election.

As of Wednesday morning, Biden has 224 electoral votes to Trump’s 213 with a winner needing 270.

Trump won Kentucky (8 electoral votes), Mississippi (6), Missouri (10), South Carolina (9), Louisiana (8), Alabama (9), Kansas (6), Utah (6), South Dakota (3), North Dakota (3), Indiana (11), Tennessee (11), West Virginia (5), Arkansas (6), Wyoming (3), Oklahoma (7), Idaho (4), Ohio (18), Florida (29), Texas (38) and Montana (3).  Four of Nebraska’s five electoral votes have also been called for the President.

Biden is the projected winner in California (55), New York (29), New Jersey (14), Illinois (20), Oregon (7), Washington (12), New Mexico (5), Colorado (9), Connecticut (7), Washington, D.C. (3), Massachusetts (11), Maryland (10), Delaware (3), New Hampshire (4), Virginia (13), Minnesota (10), Rhode Island (4), Hawaii (4) and Vermont (3). He also secured one congressional vote from Nebraska.

In the battleground states of Georgia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Michigan, experts won’t be able to call the state for either candidate. Early returns in Georgia (16) favored Trump with 93% of precincts voting, as did Michigan (16) with 77% counted. North Carolina (15) leaned toward Trump with 95% of the votes reported.

Pennsylvania (20) favored Trump with 74% of votes reported, but the mail-in ballot counting is expected to continue for days. Biden has leads in Arizona, Nevada and Maine with 82%, 79% and 69% of the precincts reporting, respectively. He also maintains very small leads in Wisconsin with 49.3% of the vote to Trump’s 49% with 89% of the ballots counted.
