Biden administration to allow migrant families separated at border to reunite in the U.S.

Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas said Monday that the Biden administration plans to allow migrant families separated under the Trump administration to reunite in the United States. Speaking during a news conference, Mayorkas called the separation of children from their parents at the Mexican border “the most powerful and heartbreaking example of the cruelty that preceded this administration.” Mayorkas said families will be given the option of reuniting in their country of origin or in the United States.

The administration is working with lawyers representing the separated families along with nongovernmental organizations, the nations of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, and the private sector. So far, about 105 families have been reunited.

Senate panel approves nomination of Merrick Garland as U.S. attorney general

On Monday, the Senate judiciary committee approved President Biden’s nomination of appellate court judge Merrick Garland to be the United States’ attorney general. The committee voted 15-7 early Monday afternoon to advance Garland’s candidacy. The nomination now advances to the full Senate for final confirmation. Most likely the Senate will hold a floor vote later this week, and is expected to approve the nomination.

If confirmed, Garland will be sworn in immediately. Garland, 68, was nominated to the post of U.S. attorney general almost two months ago and appeared before the committee for a confirmation hearing last week, saying his top early priority would be overseeing the prosecution of rioters involved in the attack on the U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 6.  He told the panel: “I will supervise the prosecution of white supremacists and others who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 — a heinous attack that sought to disrupt a cornerstone of our democracy: the peaceful transfer of power to a newly elected government. We will pursue these leads, wherever they take us.”

Garland first rose to prominence as a potential Supreme Court nominee in 2009 and 2010 for vacancies that ultimately went to Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, respectively. In 2016 he was officially nominated by former President Barack Obama to replace late Justice Antonin Scalia, however senate Republicans denied Garland a vote and argued then that whoever won that November’s presidential election should choose Scalia’s replacement.

Single-dose J&J COVID-19 vaccine to begin immediate roll-out after CDC approval

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advisory panel voted unanimously Sunday to recommend the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 single-shot vaccine for people 18 and older. During an emergency session, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices strongly endorsed the vaccine’s effectiveness in completely protecting against hospitalization and death. The federal government will be able to begin shipping doses, making a third COVID-19 vaccine available in the United States as early as this week. The new vaccine has a lower efficacy rate — 66% overall and 72% in the United States in preventing moderate to severe cases of COVID-19 — than the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines already in use.

Johnson & Johnson has said only a few million doses will be shipped to states in the days immediately after authorization, but production is expected to ramp up in the coming weeks, with 20 million doses due to be delivered by the end of March and 100 million total in the first half of the year. Johnson & Johnson also confirmed it will begin expanded trials for the vaccine on infants, newborns, pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems.

Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine can be kept at normal refrigerator temperatures. Pfizer’s vaccine had been stored and shipped at between minus 112 Fahrenheit to minus 76 though the FDA now says it can be held for two weeks at normal freezer temperatures. Moderna’s is kept in a home freezer.

Former President Trump hints at another presidential run as he delivers final speech at CPAC 2021

Former President Donald Trump hinted at another run for president in 2024 during his first speech since leaving office to close out the Conservative Political Action Conference on Sunday from Orlando, Fla.

Trump continued to falsely claim that he defeated President Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election and suggested that he “may even decide to beat them for a third time” while stopping short of officially declaring plans to run, saying in part, “I stand before you today to declare that the incredible journey we began together four years ago is far from over. We are gathered this afternoon to talk about the future — the future of our movement, the future of our party, and the future of our beloved country.”

Trump took aim at many members of the Republican party who sought to distance themselves from the former president especially in the wake of the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol. Trump’s public statements has been limited since he was banned from most major social media platforms in the aftermath of the Capitol riot. However despite a divide amongst Republicans, Trump dismissed speculation that he would break away and form his own party, saying, “I am not starting a new party. That was fake news. Fake news, no. Wouldn’t that be brilliant? Let’s start a new party and let’s divide our vote so that you can never win. No, we’re not interested in that. The Republican Party is united. The only division is between a handful of Washington D.C., establishment political hacks and everybody else all over the country.”

Morgan Wallen’s “Dangerous: The Double Album” sets chart record with 7th week at No. 1 on Billboard 200

Despite backlash from the music industry following his use of a racial slur, Morgan Wallen’s sophomore project, Dangerous: The Double Album, made history this week as it spends its seventh consecutive week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. Dangerous became the only country album to spend its first seven weeks at No.1 on the Billboard 200 in the 64-year history of the chart.

According to Billboard, the only other country album to tally its first six weeks at No.1 was Garth Brooks’ The Chase in 1992. The Chase later returned to No.1 for a total of seven non-consecutive weeks. Dangerous and The Chase are two of only eight country albums that have spent at least seven weeks in total at No.1. The last album, regardless of genre, to spend seven consecutive weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 was Drake’s Views in 2016.

Wallen has faced severe backlash following his use of the racial slur; his label, Big Loud, revealed that his recording contract had been suspended indefinitely, and his music was pulled from hundreds of radio stations across the country, as well as being removed from major playlists across various DSPs, including Spotify and Apple Music. The Academy of Country Music revealed that he was ineligible for the upcoming ACM Awards and will not be invited to participate in the show. His content and appearances were also removed from CMT and the Country Music Association.
