State seeks death penalty against suspect Bryan Kohberger in University of Idaho murders

Prosecutors will seek the death penalty against Bryan Kohberger, the suspect in the University of Idaho murders. Kohberger is accused of stabbing to death four college students in an off-campus house on Nov. 13, 2022: Kaylee Goncalves; her lifelong best friend and roommate Madison Mogen; a third roommate, Xana Kernodle; and Kernodle’s boyfriend, Ethan Chapin.

According to a new court filing, “The State gives this notice based on the fact that it has not identified or been provided with any mitigating circumstances sufficient to prohibit the triers of fact from considering all penalties authorized by the Idaho legislature including the possibility of a capital sentence. Consequently, considering all evidence currently known to the State, the State is compelled to file this notice of intent to seek the death penalty.”

After a six-week search for a suspect, 28-year-old Kohberger was arrested on Dec. 30, 2022. Kohberger was a Ph.D. student at nearby Washington State University at the time of the murders. Kohberger chose to “stand silent” at his arraignment last month; by not responding, the judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf. His trial is set for Oct. 2.

1 person dead, multiple injured after riders plunge from roller coaster in Sweden

Swedish authorities are reporting that one person was killed and several others injured when a roller coaster derailed in Stockholm on Sunday. Park officials told Sweden’s public broadcaster SVT that that one of the carriages on the ‘Jetline’ rollercoaster derailed and people fell to the ground at the Gröna Lund amusement park. Gröna Lund, which opened in 1883, is Sweden’s oldest amusement park.

Park spokeswoman Annika Troselius told SVT: “It is incredibly tragic and shocking. Unfortunately we have been informed that one person is killed and many are injured.” Park chief executive Jan Eriksson added: “The front of the train partly derailed and stopped on the track at a height of between between 20 and 25 feet. A total of 14 people were on board, of which one person has died and several are injured.” Police later confirmed that seven people were hospitalized. The regional government said nine people were taken to a hospital, one of them in serious condition. Three of the injured were children, all of them with minor injuries.

The amusement park was evacuated after the accident and will remain closed for seven days to allow investigators to find out what went wrong. According to Gröna Lund, the 2,600-foot long Jetline rollercoaster opened in 1988 and was renovated in 2000. It has a maximum height of 98 feet and a top speed of 56 mph. Gröna Lund spokeswoman Annika Troselius said: “This should not be allowed to happen. Safety is the most important thing for us. And we would never open an attraction if we were not confident that it was safe, so this is something we need to investigate thoroughly.”

3 dead, 5 wounded in Kansas City, Missouri shooting

Police in Kansas City, Missouri confirm that three people were killed and five others wounded in a shooting at a parking lot around 4:30 a.m. local time.

The Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department said in a statement that police discovered the bodies of two adult men and an adult woman in the parking lot and in the street just south of a nearby intersection. All three were declared dead at the scene. Five other shooting victims went to various hospitals in ambulances and private vehicles; police said their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Kansas City Police Department spokesperson Jake Becchina said that investigators said there was a “large gathering” in the parking lot at the time of the shooting. It was not immediately clear what the gathering was for, but the mayor indicated it may have been a local business acting as an unlicensed club. An initial investigation by police indicates the gathering took place outside an auto mechanic shop, where police have been called to before.
There was no immediate information about any arrests being made.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas wrote on Facebook: “My condolences to the families of three people killed in a shooting this morning at an apparent after-hours gathering near 57 and Prospect. If the business knew persons would be present, without security, selling alcohol, and thwarting our laws, that business should be closed … Similarly situated businesses operating as unlicensed clubs where we have seen countless shootings and murders should expect the same enforcement action.”
