Sen. Kamala Harris Accepts Democratic Nomination For Vice Presidential Candidate At 2020 Democratic National Convention

U.S. Senator Kamala Harris accepted the Democratic nomination for vice president on Wednesday, becoming the first Black woman and Asian-American on a major U.S. presidential ticket.  Harris summarized her life story on the third day of the Democratic National Convention, on an evening that featured women headliners, moderators and speakers.  Harris spoke directly to millions of women, young Americans and voters of color, constituencies Democrats need for Biden to defeat President Trump.

The choice of a running mate has bolstered Biden’s chances against Trump.  Biden, 77, would be the oldest person to become president if he is elected. His age has led to speculation he will serve only one term, making Harris a potential top contender for the nomination in 2024. Biden named Harris, 55, as his running mate last week to face incumbents Trump, 74, and Vice President Mike Pence, 61.

Former first lady and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee who lost to Trump, said, “This can’t be another woulda coulda shoulda election. No matter what, vote. Vote like our lives and livelihoods are on the line, because they are.”

Others speakers on Day 3 of the DNC were Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, and U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, who ran against Biden in the 2020 primary.

Court Rules That Britney Spears Conservatorship Will Remain Unchanged Until 2021

On Wednesday, Britney Spears request to remove her father, Jamie Spears, as sole conservator was dismissed – after a Los Angeles court made no immediate changes to her 12-year court-appointed conservatorship.

Spears, now 38, had asked for her longtime care manager, Jodi Montgomery, to permanently replace her father Jamie as her conservator, however the hearing extended the current arrangements until February 2021. Jamie Spears was appointed conservator in 2008 after the pop star was hospitalized for psychiatric treatment. The singer’s care manager Jodi Montgomery took over in a temporary capacity late last year when Jamie Spears suffered a bout of ill health.

A lawyer for Spears had submitted documents ahead of the private hearing saying Spears was “strongly opposed” to having her father return to control her affairs. Spears pulled out of a Las Vegas concert residency last year and briefly entered a mental health facility, and has not performed publicly since October 2018.

Taylor Swift’s ‘Folklore’ Holds No. 1 Spot For Third Week On Billboard 200

Taylor Swift’s latest album, “Folklore,” is holding onto the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart for the third week in a row, marking the first album by a solo woman to spend its first three weeks at No. 1 since 2018. The last time a solo female musician accomplished this was Swift herself, with her “Reputation” album back in 2017. “Folklore” is her eighth studio album.

The continued success of “Folklore” was aided last week by the CD sales in stores, with 136,000 album units sold in the U.S. in the week ending Aug. 13. Before that, it was only available for digital download on her website and iTunes.

Folklore sold 1.3 million copies on its first day and 2 million copies in its first week globally.

U.S. Postmaster General To Testify Before Congress

In light of mounting pressure from Democrats, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy on Monday agreed to testify before a House panel next week.

Tennessee Democratic Congressman Jim Cooper, along with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, demanded the head of the United States Postal Service respond to recent claims the USPS is meddling in the upcoming election process. The postmaster is now set to appear before the “urgent” House Oversight panel on August 24. Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold on Monday also threatened legal action against DeJoy, issuing a statement accusing the postal service and president of potentially colluding to “suppress voters.”

President Donald Trump has been accused of attempting to slow up postal deliveries as a means of derailing mail-in voting ahead of this November’s elections. Postmaster DeJoy is a major Republican Party fundraiser and is a former deputy finance chairman of the Republican National Committee.

Democratic National Convention Virtually Kicks Off Day One

Bernie Sanders, Republican John Kasich and former first lady Michelle Obama were among the famous speakers showing support for Joe Biden on the first day of a virtual convention to formally nominate him as the Democratic nominee in the November presidential election. The first night of speakers consisted of some in real time, as well as pre-recorded remarks and montages featuring front line workers, small business owners and an array of voters.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo also spoke, saying in part, “Now we need a leader as good as our people. A leader who appeals to the best within us, not the worst. A leader who can unify, not divide. A leader who can bring us up, not tear us down. I know that man. I’ve worked with that man. I’ve seen his talent. I’ve seen the strength. I’ve seen his pain, and I’ve seen his heart. That man is Joe Biden.”

Former Ohio Governor John Kasich, a Republican, said, “Yes, there are areas where Joe and I absolutely disagree. But that’s OK because that’s America. Because whatever our differences, we respect one another as human beings, each of us searching for justice and for purpose.”
