Gunman in Atlanta shootings is charged with murder in killing of 8 people

The man accused of killing eight people at three massage parlors in an Atlanta-area shooting was charged with murder on Wednesday. Police captured Georgia resident Robert Aaron Long after a manhunt on Tuesday night after the attacks at the massage parlors, which occurred within a short period of time and within close proximity. Eight people were killed and others were injured in the shootings.

Cherokee County Sheriff Frank Reynolds told reporters Wednesday that Long, 21, went on the shooting spree only hours after he obtained his 9mm handgun. He also said Long, who was arrested in Crisp County 150 miles south of Atlanta, has confessed to the attacks and said they were not racially motivated but admitted a sex addiction. “During his interview, he gave no indicators that this was racially motivated,” Reynolds said “We asked him that specifically and the answer was no.” Authorities added that sex addiction played a role in the shootings because Long often frequented massage parlors and wanted to eradicate a behavioral habit he was trying to break.” Six of the eight victims were of Asian descent and seven were women, details that spurred speculation that the attacks may be related to a wave of violence against Asian Americans in the United States over the past year related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Long is scheduled to be arraigned on murder charges Thursday. It wasn’t immediately known whether the handgun used in the crimes was obtained legally.

IRS extends deadline for tax return filing to May 17

The Internal Revenue Service announced on Wednesday that they have pushed back the date by which Americans must file their federal tax returns. The new filing and payment deadline is May 17, more than a month later than the traditional April 15 date.

IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said: “This continues to be a tough time for many people, and the IRS wants to continue to do everything possible to help taxpayers navigate the unusual circumstances related to the pandemic, while also working on important tax administration responsibilities. Even with the new deadline, we urge taxpayers to consider filing as soon as possible, especially those who are owed refunds. Filing electronically with direct deposit is the quickest way to get refunds, and it can help some taxpayers more quickly receive any remaining stimulus payments they may be entitled to.”

The extension also comes as the IRS handles an increasingly burdensome tax season complicated by changes implemented in the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill signed into law last week. Under that law, filers were given a tax exemption on up to $10,200 of unemployment benefits. This year’s forms will also include ways for people to report missing stimulus benefits from last year. In some cases, people may have to refile their returns using new forms.

President Biden to hold first news conference on March 25

President Joe Biden will hold his first formal news conference on March 25. White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki announced the date in Darby, Pennsylvania as Biden promoted his $1.9 trillion pandemic stimulus plan in the suburbs of Philadelphia.

The President has drawn criticism for not holding an extended question-and-answer session since taking office. Biden has had a number of brief encounters with reporters since taking office on Jan. 20, but usually only takes one or two questions before walking away. The White House has said that Biden’s attention on the coronavirus pandemic has been the main reason why he has refrained from holding a formal news conference.

Republicans and other critics have called on Biden to appear at an actual news conference as part of the president’s traditional role of being held accountable to the public. They have pointed out that the nearly two-month span since Jan. 20 is the longest period a recent new president has gone without holding a formal news conference.

France’s Prime Minster says they have entered ‘third wave’ of COVID-19 pandemic as cases surge

French Prime Minister Jean Castex said on Tuesday that additional coronavirus restrictions in the greater Paris region will be implemented as the country enters a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. France has seen a steady rise of new cases, leading to a strain on the hospital system, especially in the capital where infections have surged.

French health officials reported 29,975 new cases nationwide on Tuesday, a 4.5% weekly jump and the largest increase in a month and a half. The health ministry said there were 4,239 patients in intensive care units for COVID-19, up by 20 over 24 hours and setting a nearly four-month high. The total number of people hospitalized for the disease was at 25,492, the highest number since Feb 24.

Castex said on Wednesday that weekend lockdowns such as those already in place in two other regions were among measures to be considered for the greater Paris region. French President Emmanuel Macron still hopes a vaccination drive can help control a new wave which has been triggered by more contagious variants, and prevent France from resorting to a third national lockdown. Like many other European countries, France has lagged behind the United States and Britain in vaccinating its population.
